How An Afternoon Tea Photoshoot Became a Celebration of Beautiful Baking.

Some photoshoots are carefully styled.

Others simply come to life.

This one was somewhere in between.

When I arrived, the outdoor table was already dressed for afternoon tea. There were flowers, vintage china, linen, cake stands and most importantly, an extraordinary spread of handmade bakes. Savoury pastries sat alongside delicate meringues, generous slices of cake, buttery tray bakes and beautifully baked tarts. Every corner of the table was filled with colour, texture and something that made you want to reach out for just one more bite.

The baker, Annette, had invited a small group of friends to join us. Their job was wonderfully simple: chat, laugh, pour tea, pass plates and enjoy the food. For me, they became the finishing touch. Rather than carefully posed portraits, it was their hands reaching for a slice of cake, passing a teapot or breaking apart a pastry that brought the photographs to life. Those small, natural moments tell a much richer story than a perfectly arranged table ever could.

People often assume food photography is all about the food itself, but it's really about creating a feeling. It's about helping someone imagine themselves there, wondering which cake they'd choose first or who they'd invite to share the table.

While everyone else tucked into afternoon tea, I was happily moving around the table with my camera, chasing the light, adjusting compositions and making sure every delicious detail was captured. I didn't eat a single crumb and that's often the reality of a food photographer's day. By the time the photographs are finished, the satisfaction comes from knowing the images will continue working long after the last slice has disappeared.

Those photographs have now found their permanent home on Annette’s freshly updated website, which I also had the pleasure of designing and building. Seeing the images woven into a website that truly reflects the warmth, creativity and craftsmanship behind the business is always one of my favourite parts of the process.

Great baking deserves great photography. Great photography deserves a place to shine.

This shoot was a lovely reminder that when beautiful food, thoughtful styling, good friends and authentic moments come together, you're not simply creating pictures of cakes. You're telling the story of a business, inviting people to imagine themselves at the table and giving them every reason to book, order or visit.
